SEO is not an academic discipline learned in college. SEO is practical knowledge which continues to grow in line with logic development search engine itself. As its popularity, many people who claim to teach SEO and SEO expert, either by opening the course, write books, or articles.
So many beginners may not be able to identify the essence of basic SEO, while experienced practitioners may easily forget. SEO only has two basic elements, relevance and authority, to understand them properly is the key to success - or failure.
Relevance
Relevance is the most basic things, the quality of content and its relevance to the topic that we are targeting. Here we talk about content that is search engine friendly, usually people refer to as on page optimization. At its core is to ensure that search engines consider website content - or a web page - are relevant to a particular topic that we are targeting.
There are many theories for quality content and techniques of on page optimization, making the search engines recognize the relevance of content to the target topic. But we can simply underline the relevance of that element is content.
Authority
Authority is directly related to links from other websites. Search engines regard these links as a reference, the person who gave a statement that the content of our websites or web pages is a valuable source of information. Additional element here is the quality of the website from which we get the link. Practically this can be analogous to that reference from someone important had higher scores than the reference from the crowd. Parameters can be much, but we can underline that the authorities related to link popularity.
Which is more important?
Each search algorithm engines may give different emphasis in the algorithm, but all search engines use a combination of relevance (content) and authority (link) as the basis for determining the rankings.
You may often hear the phrase "Content is King" in SEO. Maybe there is truth, because if we are considered valuable content, links that increase the authority of our website will come by itself. But things like answering the question "Which is much older then, egg or chicken?" However the high value of the content we have, we need the authority to make search engines redistribute it to read people. Without being read, who will realize their importance and then provide references?
In konsisi as above, we can no longer choose which is more important. Which is more true of the phrase "Content is King" and "Link is King". Effective SEO involves both. Since each search engine to make an emphasis on their own, we can not pick which one is given a higher emphasis, we must give equal attention. SEO has two kings. If either of these two key elements were forgotten, our website will never approach we hope to get a ranking, visitors and buyers.
If you have studied physics you probably remember that water consists of hydrogen and oxygen. If there is only one element only, it will never become water. SEO like that too, we need both, relevance and authority, content and links, for our website to get good grades. Unfortunately until now there are many people who do SEO with an emphasis on one only, forgetting the other. By analogy, the water we can with a straightforward claim that is not SEO.
We could have hundreds, thousands, millions of links, but if the content of websites or web pages we are not qualified in relevance with the target topic, or qualified but search engines do not see it, chances are high ranking just a mere dream. In terms of SEO we can express this website has a high authority but the relevance is low. Of course there are conditions on the contrary, perfectly content and search engine friendly but very few links, high relevance to low authority.
What should you make is a high-quality topical content that is optimized so that search engine friendly, then build a network of links from high quality websites at the most, the high authority of high relevance. Probably still will take time, but the ranking that we expect not just a mere dream, just a matter of time.
Like anything else in life, sometimes there are exceptions. We sometimes see the exceptions in the relationship between relevance and authority with SEO success, but not necessarily deny the basic principle.
